GLUCKSMAN, HARRY L.

GLUCKSMAN, HARRY L. (1889–1938), U.S. communal worker. Glucksman was born in New York. A founder of the Jewish center movement in the U.S. and Canada, he joined the national jewish Welfare Board in 1917 when it was organized as a war service agency and was executive director for 19 years until his death. Previously, Glucksman had served in executive capacities with the Jewish Big Brothers (in N.Y.), the 92nd Street YMHA (also in N.Y.), and the New Orleans YMHA. An able administrator and organizer, Glucksman was widely consulted on various aspects of Jewish community life. He was a supporter of Zionism and was prominent in the American Jewish Committee, the New York YMHA, and the Jewish Board of Guardians.
